NINA COMES OUT FROM UNDER THE BED TO GO ON THE AIR

I stood looking in disbelief at the cassette tape labelled Nina Simone when I cleared out under the bed of my London home 6 years ago.

Far as I was aware all my interview tapes of that vintage (1984, the NME Nina piece is up on the Rocksbackpages website) were ransacked by the kids from out of the lock up cupboard I was returning to empty , too late, when I moved out of the Barnsbury Estate N1 1989.

But there it was , the tape had somehow survived 10 years under the bed, undiscovered but providentially presenting itself as I prepared to say goodby.

And the interview tape tells a very different tale than the one told by the feature.

Nina and her brother were kind and considerate, contrary to her usually touted image, helping calm the nerves of a young 20 year old reporter (who , of course, appeared all butchly authoritative in the published piece).

Thanks to The Curator Alistair Murphy the tape got digitised some time ago and now I get to air a small clip, exclusive content near the end of the third TMR on Radio GJ Show.

Worth listening to the whole show, OF COURSE, as its solid gold, music good enough to make your ears bleed with pleasure.

To be followed with much more in the weeks , months and years ahead.

Expect to hear more, err, exclusive content from Nina, James Brown and ...Paul McCartney (just in case you ain’t had enough of him on your TV, radio, website or publication of choice in the past however many months the great entertainer has been hitting the Lyrics/Get Back /Let It Be promo trail).
